Visual language - Colour Theory Lecture Notes.

The colour of an object doesn't change but the light can give it a different perspective.


Ittens 7 Contrasts



  • Contrast of Tone 
    • Formed by the juxtaposition of tonal value
    • The closer the tone the lesser the contrast
  • Contrast of Hue
    • Deals with chromatic value, saturation, tone basically what your looking at
  • Contrast of Saturation
    • Juxtaposition of light and dark and their relative saturations
  • Contrast of Extension
    • assigning proportional field sizes in relation to the weight of a colour, also known as contrast of proportion
  • Contrast of Temperature
    • Juxtaposing hues that can be considered warm or cool/hot or cold
  • Complementary Contrasts
    • colours with less contrast are easier on the eyes, colours with higher contrast are battling with each other
  • Simultaneous Contrasts
    • formed when boundaries between colours perceptually vibrate.
