OUGD202 - Self Evaluation

BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN
LEVEL
05
 Module Code
OUGD202

 Module Title
DESIGN PRODUCTION - DIGITAL

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
Charlie Crosby

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I’ve learnt a lot of new skills through this module as I’ve never touched on digital design and motion graphics. In particular I found that the development of storyboarding as a skill was essential, It introduced me to considerations such as action and title safe zones, time and key frames.
After Effects was a completely alien programme to me before this module and although I’m not a particularly digitally driven designer I grasped it and appreciated it straight away.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I’ve developed a new way of seeing and speculating things, noise and motions and time all play a factor in the way I’ve been considering my designs and this has increased more and more as the module has gone on.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I would say the strengths in my work are the application of concepts, without a concept the design can seem random or neglected due to lack of attention. I tried to focus everything I was doing and everything I was designing on concepts driven by and relevant to the content of the project.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I felt as though I could have experimented more, and with that documented what I was doing more thoroughly to really develop my skills and learn more about the software. I wouldn’t put this down to procrastination but to a severe amount of personal, social and other academic constraints which were unavoidable.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

  1. Be more aware of how well I’m documenting what I’m doing when using software, I want to develop a more thorough and consistent documentation habit.
  2. Make sure I have the content for my work ready before using software such as After Effects.
  3. Study more online tutorials and focus on home schooling myself more to discover new methods and approaches to my designs.
  4. Carry out more research throughout the brief to keep up to date and well informed about my content.
  5. Keep searching for inspiration, watch more video clips, read more articles and blogs, search for more designers and professional work to influence and fuel my creativity.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

SILENT MOVIE - Silent Movies reviewed

I've changed a few parts of my silents movies in response to the mock submission. Mainly I've just altered the aesthetic on some of them to make them look like a set of short motion pieces in response to the same brief.

Untitled from Charlie Crosby on Vimeo.

Instead of having the word enter from behind the camera and falling as it it were a birds eye view, I've changed it so its like the word is bouncing of an unseen wall at the back of the frame. I needed to change this because the word was so pixelated near the start of the sequence and the falling effect was too quick to make out what was actually happening.

I have changed the white background to the same feathered blue mask as the other sequences for this one.

This, I feel, is one of the stronger sequences however the entry and motion of the final font wasn't in keeping with the neat execution of the other fonts. I've adapted it it by changing the position in the background that it appears and the speed of which it knocks the previous font out of the way. the movement is sharper making it feel like the new font is overpowering the previous and bouncing it out of the way.

Again I just need to change the background for this sequence to match the others.

I kept this one the same as I receive a lot of praise in the crits, and if it isn't broken then you shouldn't fix it. The sequence was noted as 'brilliantly executed' so I didn't want to risk tampering with anything. The Colour of the background is a little different to that of the others but when I changed it to be the same I lost the visibility of the word 'bounce', all the more reason to leave it unaltered.

SILENT MOVIE - 5 Final Movies & Post Production Storyboards

Silent Movie 1 - Bounce enters rebounds and spins to centre.

Silent Movie 2 - Bounce enters from behind camera view to bounce in the distance back up to the viewer. Birds eye view idea.

Silent Movie 3 - Bounce appears and drops changing colour as the word bounces.

Silent Movie 4 - Fonts bounce each other out of the way for the screen space, concept being that the bigger fonts are able to bounce the smaller ones out of the way. Playing on the definition of the word bounce 'to be physically bounced from a space or area'

Silent Movie 5 - Bounce chain reaction colour change and 'e' drops and bounces.

SILENT MOVIE - Silent Movie 5 design process in After Effects

The concept of this sequence is that it is a chain reaction, the letter 'B' bumps into the next letter in the word and causes a chain reaction (represented with the use of colour) to knock the Letter 'E' over a proposed ledge and it bounces when it hits the bottom of the frame.

Project content.

Layers in composition.

This was by far the most complex sequence to execute out of the 5 but I feel It's also the best and most creatively effective.

I made good use of this sequence to experiment with the functions and options for animation that come with using After Effects type tool instead of importing an Illustrator file as footage or composition.

SILENT MOVIE - Silent Movie 4 design process in After Effects

This is my favourite concept out of the 5 sequences. Focussing on the definition of the word 'bounce' 'to bounce someone or something from an area or space' much like a doorman at a social venue. I've applied this to the theory that the bigger the person the stronger the person and used 4 different fonts to represent different sized people. The bigger font bounces the previous smaller one out of the frame throughout the sequence till only the biggest is left.

Project Content.

This sequence allowed me to include more than one idea of bouncing so it has broader variety of communicating the meaning of the word. The different fonts almost have characters of their own as it tells a short story. Survival of the fittest font.
