End of Module Self Evaluation

Overview

At the beginning of this module I set out to focus my practice on branding and identity. However, throughout the module I have picked up on many different skills and techniques that have inspired me to be more innovative, experimental and self-challenging. I’ve really enjoyed the briefs that I’ve written and selected to work on which is a pleasant change, as I’ve not always engaged with the set briefs during level 4 and 5. To write my own and develop them has been a great opportunity to explore the creative opportunities around some of my favorite topics and learn more about others.

Specific skills development.

Book binding – I’ve always had an interest in book binding since my first workshop in my foundation year at MMU but I’ve never really developed it as a skill or put it into practice. Some of the briefs I’ve been working on this term have pushed me to work with publication or editorial design that has lead me to learn more about book binding and getting a good quality bind. Perfect binging in particular has been a style of bind that I could never really master until this year. I would like to work more with book binding for its hands on craft element and the satisfaction of having a hand made, high quality product.

Laser cutting – before level 6 I had never used a laser cutter, nor did I know how to prepare documents for laser cutting or even the possible outcomes and materials that can be used. The reason for leaving it so late to learn this skill was mostly down to thinking it was too difficult or long winded to learn which put me off it in the past. However, I forced myself to try it for my MONK brief as it would fit with the aesthetic and branding I was going for and it proved to be much easier and straight forward than I had first anticipated. Once I was taught the basics for what I wanted to do and how to prepare the content and files it was incredibly easy and I even found myself showing others how to use the facility shortly after. It’s definitely a valuable process to learn about and I plan to experiment with different materials for future briefs.

Foil blocking – this is a tricky print finish to perfect and it didn’t always come out very well when I tried it, so essentially its still a skill that I am developing and learning about. I don’t like to use foiling unless it ties in really well with the concept of my design. For the VIEW brief it became an integral part as I was working with holographic foil and the design was based on holography and the process of creating holograms.

Embossing – embossing is one of my preferred print finishes as it gives any brand a unique and bespoke feel. I looked into copper plating and woodblock press embossing but never practiced them for any of my briefs. I did how use embossing tools and do a lot of it by hand for the BIKOLOGY brief.

Screen printing – with screen printing its hard to get it right each time with so much to remember in the process and there are so many specifications and considerations. On top of this there is so much room for experimental screen printing that it’s hard to refine it. With my collaborative I investigated screen printing onto fabric which isn’t too dissimilar to printing onto paper. The technique is the same but it takes some practice to get a good knack for it.

Strengths

Concept development – I find that I enjoy my work a lot more when I work to a concept and have it echo throughout my branding and design choices. This is a real strength as It justifies why I’m doing everything I’m doing. The development process is different for each brief I undertake but I think it’s been a pillar for my briefs and something that I’ve really got to grips with.

Logo design – in the past I wouldn’t have said this was a strength but the way I look at a brief and the things I’ve began to consider when analyzing briefs and has improved massively this term which has improved my logo designs.
Brand and Identity

Time and project management – This hasn’t been a massive strength but I have made a significant effort with it for this module and I’ve managed to get the majority of my work to a standard that

Illustrator – I’ve become very well acquainted with Adobe Illustrator and I work best with this particular software to produce a massive amount of work quickly. It’s been a key tool for my development of logos and applying the various brandings across different media and print formats.

Time management and organization when working with others – I asked Marty what he thought my main strength was when working together and he said that I was good with managing my time and getting things done. If I need to do something I got it done, I wouldn’t start it and leave it unfinished. Also I would work efficiently and rationalize a lot of the collaborative work in order to get the job done. I do agree with this somewhat but I’d say it could also be considered as a restrictive trait that may hold me back sometimes from being innovative and pushing my briefs further through taking risks.

Areas for improvement

Editorial, type and layout – this is something that I would normally steer clear of but on several occasions in my briefs for this module I have found myself wanting to create a deliverable that is focused around type and layout. Along with book binding I would like to develop my skills in type setting to broaden my skillset and develop myself as a well rounded designer.

Project management – my project management has been fair but it still needs a lot of improvement. I think that I need to be strict with myself when planning to work on several briefs at the same time.

Design for web and screen – so far my design work has been orientated around print and I’ve focused on developing my knowledge and skills in different processes. It’s become clear that I need to work more on digital design and design for web. I would like to focus on methods to link print and digital to push the boundaries of the two closer together.

Presentation – I think my presentation of my work has greatly improved but still I think that my submission boards could be improved greatly if I had placed the text down the left hand side in a column and broken each board down into more specific parts of the brief. The content I’ve written for them in hindsight was perhaps a bit too general and could have gone into greater detail.

Consider more – take into account the possibilities of final outcomes more towards the start of the design process to save time when developing my briefs.

Things I would do differently

Research more thoroughly and in a structured fashion to gather information about my subject and relate it to contextual influences to inform my design decisions. Research is something I can either neglect or get lost in, it’s never a sensible medium. I think this may be down to project management but I would probably spend a specific amount of time researching and defining design approaches, print finishes and production methods

I would have been more proactive with taking my designs from screen to print, being around some of my peers I’ve picked up on the different ways in which they work and develop their designs and I feel that I definitely would have pushed all my brief further if I had done more test prints and made critical developments and design choices. The editorial and hand crafted products that I produced definitely would have benefitted from this sort of practice.

Take on more small briefs and one day projects. Although I didn’t respond to some of the briefs I undertook in a way that I had originally wanted to because of the time constraints, I would have liked to have still challenged myself to some smaller briefs alongside the bigger projects.

I would definitely have made more use of the facilities at Vernon Street for binding more publications and getting copper plates made to experiment with more processes and finishes.

I would definitely use InDesign more and work more often in the software where it’s appropriate. I have had plenty of workshops in the software but rarely use it and now is the time to put it to good use. Over the coming months I want to greatly improve my type and layout skills and knowledge to develop my confidence so I can take on live briefs that require those skills.

Summary

Overall I have really enjoyed the briefs I’ve worked on this module and I feel a massive improvement in the quality of my work. There has been a definite shift in my motivation, attitude and approach towards designing and developing my work. I plan to keep this positive note up and carry on through into FMP. I have high hopes for my FMP and the development of some of the work I’ve started this term with potential collaborations and extensions of briefs and also live, freelance work on the horizon.

PCL - Final Boards for submission

PCL - Board development / response to crit and tutorials

After the crit I went back to working on my briefs but I've found some time to address a few things with my boards. The photography needed to be changed to show off the work to a better and more engaging standard so I'm going to rephotograph the deliverables and create some mock ups to show the context of the digital side of the brief.

I've dropped the line that divided the text and the images on the board. The images before appeared to be squashed but now the line has been removed the images have more space to sit on the page and the board in general appears less cluttered.

PCL - Social media mock ups for submission boards

I normally can't stand doing mock ups but surprisingly this was quite enjoyable. I think I'm very much involved with my briefs and I like the work I'm producing this year so I find doing the work to be really fun and less of a chore than previous years. I've kept the mock ups simple and used a straight on image of an iMac desktop computer. I've found it's hard to make a good mock up and show the work in context efficiently if you use images with too much of an angle.

Facebook.

Twitter.

The bigcartel account isn't ready yet as I have to set up a monthly payment which I can't afford until the next installment of my loan comes in. Also Marty and I have already made plans to rethink what we want to do with the project for FMP and how we're going to get the sales going. The bigcartel will be launched along with the Twitter and once we have a way of distributing the products effectively.

PCL - Business cards

Originally I was going to design the business cards as part of the branding, but Marty put the finishing touches on the contact details. This is where we collaborate best as he really perfects the readability and gets the hierarchy on track and I work the brand into all the deliverables. We work together on most of the concept development and instead of have separate business cards, we thought it would be a more efficient idea to have our details on the same card and perforate it so it can be passed on and it gives customers and clients two contacts. This gets twice the networking done as Marty may be at one event and I could be meeting another client. It gives us an equal amount of networking and contact building.

PCL - social media logo tailoring

I've done something similar to this before but I had to do it very quickly this time round. I didn't want to spend an unnecessary amount of time playing around with it so I was quicj strict with my self and kept it to black and white and nothing more.

I pulled some flat images from a google image search for each logo and vectored the outlines using the pen tool. It was pretty easy to do but it works well. I designing for social media and I have a really interest in print, so by doing this I was combing the two and it's got me thinking about the ways to use print and physical designs to link over to digital and screen based design.

PCL - Directing people to the social media and online presence

I hadn't considered any methods of directing people to our online presence until I actually set up the social networks. A business card is a great way of leaving your mark and contact details with a client or investor etc. But they don't always direct you to anything other than a website or an email. We need something impactive and obvious that shows people where to find us and follow us.

I've designed a second card that will be distributed widely at events and be given away with every purchase. The card required the logos of the social networks and message to prompt people to find us and as expected it needs the branding.

Here are the cards alongside the business cards. Marty and I refer to them as social directory cards so we can define the two whilst discussed the label.

PCL - Redesigning the Twitter account

I haven't launched the Twitter feed yet because Marty and I have agreed it would be best to wait until we have a few more likes on the Facebook page, so more people see it the first time and we can hopefully get a good boom of likes and retweets. Also I needed to redesign/update the designs on the Twitter account so that they match and work as a set with the Facebook page.

I've applied one of the vectored artworks for a t-shirt design to the background and tiled it to create a background pattern to the whole feed. I think this works better than the one before as it was too bland and the logo was half hidden most of the time.

This was the first development, shifting from the white on black to the new logo and have black on white.

From here we decided to drop the word 'clothing' from underneath the logo. You can see how the pattern creates a more interesting background apposed to the blank white one. The background will be changed regularly to keep it interesting, engaging and to remain in conjunction with what ever projects we're work on within the business.

The next update was to upload the final logo of the label to the thumbnail photo and header.

The account is now complete and ready to be released, we're just waiting on the opportune moment to post a link out.

PCL - Board development

These are my initial starting points for my boards. I've started these ones first as this brief is the nearest to completion. I've tried to break down the boards into specific things that I want to say about my role within the brief.

Break down:

   - brief
   - brand and identity
   - social media and online presence
   - skills development
   - proposals

The rest of my boards will be slightly different but I'll be keeping the layout and idea consistent throughout. Each brief will include a skills development board to display which specific skills I've learned and developed. I want to talk about my skills development more than anything as I think the they are the things that matter the most about being on the course. Developing, learning and refining my practice is what its all about for me.

PCL - What clients usually request from photographers

I've had a conversation about the images with Thierry and he's managed to edit and finalise all the photos we needed. We've asked him to put forward the photos that he would like to use and the ones that he thinks are the best because as he has a specific skills set we wanted to hear his opinion and hopefully it would inform ours.

I know have a greater understanding of what a client would usually ask for from a photographer in a more professional environment. Typically they state what they need photographing and how many images they need for example: 6 designs on 3 different coloured t-shirts, 2 images of each. Then the photographer would take about 6 photos of each requested item and the client can pick the best/favourite from those for each item. This makes a lot more sense than the way I was originally selecting the images as I was choosing ones that looked good but a lot of them were very similar and we wouldn't have needed that many variations.

PCL - Image selection

Thierry has sent me some PDF's of all the images that he took at the photo shoot and has asked me to pick out the ones Marty and I would like to be edited and used.

Picking them from contact sheets isn't easy as you can't always see the full quality of the image, but having them on screen and in a print format did make it easier. Originally I chose about 50 images but I knew that this would be way too many and we wouldn't need all of them so I went over the favourited ones and picked out the best of those, trying not to get to many similar ones and to also get as many of the different designs and colours in the final choices.

Unfortunately Marty had to go to work so I made the choice of all the images myself and emailed them over to Thierry. Furthermore, Thierry has asked that we don't use/ blog/ post any of the contact sheets or unedited photos without his permission as they are directly linked to him and he wouldn't want anything to be online that he's not happy with. We're very respectful of this and so we wont be blogging any of the photos or the content of the look book until it's completely refined and finished and we have full approval from Thierry.

PCL - The photo shoot

Today we finally got to carry out the photo shoot. Two out of the 3 models turned up but we went ahead with it as it wasn't much of an issue. The location was brilliant and when e first got there we explored the rooftop a bit and their were copious backdrops and photo opportunities, however, before we were about to begin a maintenance worker came and told us we could be up their. After a few moments of panic we managed to convince him to let us continue and we were done within 2 hours.

I took it upon myself to document the photo shoot as we wouldn't be able to use the photos Thierry was taking straight away and we want to keep them exclusive to the look book.

To keep on top of the Facebook page I updated a status that expressed the excitement about the photo shoot and informed the following of the page about the upcoming look book.

PCL - reorganising the photo shoot

The photo shoot was meant to be taking place tomorrow (Saturday 24th of November) at 3pm. However I received a phone call from Thierry explaining that two of the models couldn't make the original agreed time so we needed to reschedule. After checking both Marty's and mine own availability we have rearranged it for the following Thursday at 2pm.

I'm a little bit concerned about the models pulling out again as this is the last available date we have to do the photo shoot. Any later and it would be a nightmare and unfeasible for Marty to design the look book, test print it and finalise it to the standard we want.

PCL - 100 likes

Really pleased because the Facebook page has just reached 100 likes and we've decided to put out a competition to give away some free merchandise. The idea will be to promote the page in the process.

As you can see the amount of shares of a photo or status and also view the content, we're going to ask the fans of the page to share a picture of a product and whoever creates the best/most impressive share will be sent the free gifts.

We've yet to decided on the free gifts and the way to deliver this competition but it's a work in progress for the moment.

PCL - More screen printing.

Marty and I have spent the day screen printing and processing screens. We had a few set backs but we've managed to get around them and get a lot of work done so we're feeling good about the progress at the moment.

As the drop in print has been cancelled due to teaching requirements I had to print the positives in the mac suites early in the morning. The positives didn't work as well as we'd hoped for because the designs had mark and dots that were to small or thin to be picked but when exposing them. So we Marty had to re design one completely and redo the exposure. This took up some time but fortunately we had other things to print whilst this was going on.

The positive on left actually worked ok but we lost a bit of the detail in the middle with the thinner lines. The positive on the right is the one which failed when exposing. The dots were too fine to be picked up by the light unit.

This is the amended positive. The dots are about 4 times bigger than before and the exposure was perfect apart from some little bits of blockage which cause some of the emulsion to peel off that and spoil the design.

Once the amended design was printed, Marty exposed it but there was some blockage on the screen which we're not sure how it got there, whether it was lack of cleaning or if it came from the exposure unit. So to keep the prints to the best quality we can we made the decision to redo the screen yet again. This meant that we didn't get the expose it by the end of the day though.

It's difficult to document the process whilst doing it as it's very hands on and needs to be done quickly and efficiently to avoid blockage on the screens and to avoid mess or ruining the products. We managed to a few shots of both of us working on the screens and printing shirts though.

Finally we managed to get the products we had printed, heat pressed and finished.

It was great to spend the entire day on one brief and get some much done. We keep noticing opportunities and possible developments for future designs for the clothes as we were going along so it's been inspiring and we definitely want to push the project further after hand in.
